Subway Bread Calories and Nutritional Guide

Let’s talk about the foundation of every sub, the bread. Currently Subway offers 8 bread options, and they are Artisan Italian bread, hearty multigrain, Jalapeño cheddar Bread, Artisan flatbread, 12″ wrap, 9″ Wrap, Mini Artisan Italian, and the Mini Hearty Multigrain Bread.
The bread is where a lot of the calories, the carbs, the sodium, all of it lives.
So, I dug into the numbers, all of them. Every loaf, every wrap, every pocket. Here’s what you’re actually working with when you walk up to that glass case.
If you want quick answers, you can use this calculator for calculating bread calories and nutrition:

Now let’s take deeper look.
Artisan Italian Bread
One 6-inch serving comes in at 210 calories, 2 grams of fat, 380mg of sodium, 39 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fiber, and 8 grams of protein.
Here’s what jumps out at me. The protein 8 grams from just the bread alone isn’t nothing. Most white breads aren’t giving you that.
Also, check the iron 90% DV that’s actually significant and calcium at 80% DV? for a bread? That’s the fortification doing work.
Hearty Multigrain Bread
One 6-inch serving gives 200 calories, 3 grams of fat, 350mg of sodium, 36 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 4 grams of added sugar, 9 grams of protein.
So, compared to the Italian you’re saving 10 calories, not a game changer but you are getting more fiber, 3 grams vs. 1 gram. That’s actually meaningful as fiber keeps you full and helps in digestion, all that good stuff.
The protein is slightly higher at 9 grams. The sugar is slightly higher too, but we’re talking 4 grams of added sugar. Not ideal, but also not dessert.
Here’s the catch, look at the calcium 2% DV and iron10% DV. The Italian bread absolutely destroys the multigrain on micronutrients. So, if you’re picking multigrain thinking, it’s superior in every way, the numbers say otherwise. It’s a trade-off more fiber, less vitamins.
Jalapeño Cheddar Bread
Okay, this one’s different. You’re not getting this by accident; you’re getting this because you want flavor.
82 grams serving size (heavier because of the cheese and peppers baked in), 240 calories, 5 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, 500mg of sodium, 39 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugar, 9 grams of protein.
Also worth noting, 5mg of cholesterol the others have zero.
This is one of the highest calorie breads of the standard 6-inch options which is high in fats and sodium by a decent margin.
But it’s also the most flavorful, that jalapeno gives you a little warmth, the cheddar gives you that salty and cheesy edge.
Artisan Flatbread
220 calories, 4 grams of fat, 360mg of sodium, 40 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fiber, 2 grams of sugar, 7 grams of protein.
Nutritionally, it’s pretty close to the Italian bread. Slightly higher calories, slightly higher fat, slightly lower protein.
12″ Wrap
Alright let’s talk wraps. People think wraps are automatically lighter than bread but that’s not always true.
This 12-inch wrap, the big one, comes in at 300 calories, 8 grams of fat, 580mg of sodium, 50 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fiber, 2 grams of sugar, and 8 grams of protein.
Compare that to a 6-inch Italian at 210 calories. If you double the Italian for a footlong, you’re at 420 calories just in bread. So, the wrap saves you about 120 calories compared to a footlong on Italian.
9″ Wrap (Pocket)
So, for the pockets, the wrap itself is actually pretty reasonable,150 calorie is light. The sodium is there that is 340mg, but that’s before they stuff it with meat and sauce.
The protein from the wrap alone is only 4 grams, which makes sense. It’s thin it’s just the vessel. The protein in the pockets comes from the filling.
If you’re looking at the pockets, the wrap isn’t the problem. It’s what they put inside that you got to watch.
Mini Artisan Italian Bread
If you’re a smaller person, or you’re pairing the sub with something else, or you’re feeding a kid, this is solid. Portion control without feeling like you’re eating nothing.
Mini Hearty Multigrain Bread
Same story as the big multigrain. Lower calories than the mini-Italian, more fiber, but way less calcium and iron 0% DV for calcium, 8% DV for iron.
So, same trade-off with fiber or micronutrients, pick your priority.
So, which bread should you pick?
If you want the most balanced, all-around option with good protein and solid micronutrients, the 6″ Artisan Italian is hard to beat. It’s the standard for a reason.
If fiber is your focus and you’re willing to sacrifice some vitamins, go Hearty Multigrain. That extra 2 grams of fiber makes a difference if you’re watching your digestion or trying to stay full longer.
If you’re counting calories hard and want a footlong without footlong bread, the 12″ wrap saves you calories compared to 6″ double bread, or you can go with the mini ones. Just watch what you put in it.
If you want flavor and don’t care about the numbers today, jalapeno cheddar is the move.
I’ve got all this loaded into the calorie calculator if you want to build your perfect sub and see where you land. Everyone’s goals are different pick what fits yours.
